It goes beyond the fancifully sweet and romantic photos being posted on social media. Of course we all do selective updating of social media, who in the right mind would still be sane (or insane) enough to still post for cuddly photos during heated arguments when all that’s going through the mind is “Ugh, how irritating can you possibly get”, “Why must you keep getting on my nerves”, “Why can’t you just uphold your own promise” and the angry list goes on.

Relationships aren’t smooth sailing, at all. I bet even when I’m in my 70s, I’d still have these nerve wrecking moments because I’m always young at heart? Of course not, it’s because what sends me ticking off now will still have the same impact on me eons later. Despite what irks me now may not irk me years later, the opposite will happen - what doesn’t pester me now will pester me when I’m in my 70s. It will be the same for him too.

1 more year and I will be celebrating our 10th year anniversary with hubs and he still manages to piss me off by repeating the same mistake countless times, what great consistency. Tell me how can a 70yo woman be able to tolerate this without arguing?

Sometimes we harp on petty issues, sometimes we let it go because it really doesn’t bother us and we are better off just being the usual lovey dovey couple. Other times, we scream and yell at each other, with him calling me names (idiot) which then provokes me even more because I hate it when he does that and he knows it yet still hasn’t changed this bad habit. Though not as often any longer, we still give each other the cold shoulder after a huge argument. In short, we behave nothing like the calm and quaint couple who has been together for half our lives. We are still the rowdy young couple who quarrels in the crowd alongside Clarke Quay river, the outrageous couple who screams at each other in the car, the fiery couple who parted ways in public because the woman still can’t learn to not walk away and isolate herself during a serious frenzied argument. Yes all cited examples are true, with the second and third examples true as at 2 weeks ago. Oh man.

Unpleasant scenes like this, some would say it is avoidable, which I agree. We can choose not to argue and calmly talk things out instead. I can choose not to walk away. He can choose to stop his name calling habit. But that’s not the main point. The point is we have to understand that such unpleasant and hurtful moments aren’t abnormal and that it isn’t a sign that perhaps we won’t ever work out. Else, why would we have said ‘Yes’ to each other?

I can’t give my opinions on how to avoid arguments because truthfully speaking, I’m more of a hot-tempered person than hubs is (at least he isn’t to me, most of the times), so I’m the last person who can blatantly boast about how to avoid argument and attain peace and serenity. But I want to share and document down what works out for this relationship, for us.

1.    “Don’t sweep things under the carpet in hope that the root of the problem will eventually solve itself.” It won’t. If problem would resolve itself, we’d have scored full marks for all our academic papers, wouldn’t we? Same here. Voice out your unhappiness, argue out both sides of the coin. Only when the problem is striped bare and naked then the resolving process can kick in right? Yes, you don’t want to argue, honestly who wants that? But avoiding an argument suppresses emotions, builds up negativity within, then how can an unhappy you continue to live happily with another? Eventually you’re just crafting out an unhappy relationship.

2.    “Don’t start an argument for the sake of it.” Don’t delve into an argument with the competitive mindset that “I just want to win”. I used to be that debater. I just want to prove my point, that’s all. But that’s an imbalanced and toxic relationship where only one person’s voice is heard every single time whereas the other sees no point in speaking out. A couple’s argument should be one that’s constructive and beneficial for the relationship, one that will smooth out the sharp edges that are prodding our hearts, not one which you use as a weapon to inflict more harm onto his/her existing wound.

3.    That leads to “Always listen.” Listen, even during an argument. Yes, it is tough trying to keep an open mind and understanding ear when you’re arguing, but always listen even during an argument. It’s true that they may say hurtful things that they don’t mean out of anger. But it’s also true that we voice out what we truly feel when we’re angry because we can’t seem to and perhaps don’t bother to control/conceal our emotions.

4.    “Don’t measure their sorrow according to your own ruler.” When they put aside their ego to tell you that they are hurt by what you say/do, you don’t get to decide that they aren’t. It is tough as hell to admit that we’re hurt/miserable because our survival instinct always prompts us to guard our weaker side so that the predator will not spot this prey. So laying our weakness on the table for you, that attests we’ve let you into our hearts, trusting that you don’t see us as a prey to be taken advantage of; we’ve let you in to become a part of us.

5.    “Don’t even be the last person who doubts them.” Never doubt them. You shouldn’t even be the last person to doubt them. We may underestimate how far our genuine support for them will take them but this definitely means more than the taste of success to them. Never let them forget how good and precious it actually feels to have someone who believes in them. Be the anchor to their boat, be the sauce to their satay, be the tea to their pot. Whatever it is, be there for them because we’ve all been through that; we all know how depressing it is to be in it all alone.

6.    “Let them enjoy time away from you.” Of course you guys should spend quality and enjoyable time together but this is just as crucial. This is an ongoing and long term investment of your relationship. Why? By allowing them to have their own space and time to do things that make them ecstatic, it pumps up their soul, it allows them to attain their own goals, it brushes up their skill sets, it satisfies their own wishes. In short, it makes them more ‘wholesome’ (like a meal) and cultivates an improvised version of them. Then most naturally, a happy being will inject more happiness into the relationship right?

Unless both of you have all the same interests, same close circle of friends, same goals, same skill sets, same hobbies then you guys can stick together happily every second.

7.    “Never forget the good O times.” Especially essential during the rough patches of any relationship. I believe that the first evident rough patch of a relationship will be during the first 2-3 years. 2-3 years isn’t a long time frame, but it’s one that’s long enough to get to know a person’s flaws, habits, personalities, then that’s when disagreements begin to surface almost every other day. Then you start to get sick and tired of these arguments that seem to become a routine cycle of your relationship and you start to question if this will ever work out. But even amidst these arguments and rough patches, be it in the first 2-3 years or 20 years down the road, never disregard all the beautiful moments of your relationship.

The below will get very cliché and mushy but it’s true and that’s mainly how we keep our relationship fresh and strong (our close friends will also call it crazy). The bottom line is to allow yourself to be reminded of how much he/she loves you, even the slightest clue.

For me, I get reminded of his love for me by how he peels prawn for me whenever. By how he gets angry when I starve myself because I’m lazy to eat. By how he puts me as priority, ahead of everyone (he took a long time to convince me on this). By how he coaxes me because he knows I’m just throwing tantrum for him to do so. By how he runs in the rain half naked because he gives me his shirt to cover my head. By how he tries every means to get me something that I like even though I hate to see him spend on me. By how he boasts about me and our love story to others. By how he kisses or touches my face when he thinks I’m asleep but I know it.

I can go on and on, the thing is we should always remember these moments of how we even fell in love with this person the first time round so that we can find ourselves falling over and over for the same One.

Like what I’ve told him before “Even when I’m upset at you, I love you, even when I’m angry at you, I love you.” Of course this point isn’t meant to be delusional. When he/she abuses you physically, emotionally, it IS NOT RIGHT for you to remember the good O times and deceive yourself into staying and mending this relationship. You get my drift.

What I’ve documented down for my sake (and hopefully yours), we are still working hard on it because we aren’t the perfect couple, and will never be, cause really, no one is.

People whom I followed closely on social media, I feel like I know them on a personal level, just because I stalk their penned down thoughts. I'm nosy, but I genuinely want to know what happened, whose hearts got broken, whose wounds were ripped apart, whose love didn't get reciprocated, whose concern got shoved aside, whose tears were wasted on wet pillows. I yearn to know not because I want to be judgmental & start sticking my nose into who's right and who's wrong. I just wish to understand someone else's love story.

Love hits some like a hurricane, left some with an empty and broken soul. It has the ability to bring out the best and worst of someone. A feeling so powerful, I used to think it will only happen once. But having read other's love stories, it has taught me otherwise. I could list down a long list of precious lessons their stories have widened my narrow perspective. Which is why I wish to know.

Because I don't wish to be complacent when it comes to love. When you think you know certain aspects of life, you tend to appear more narrow minded because you think you know it all but there are so many things to be chanced upon, to be learnt, to be understood. So here I am, a nosy individual, embarking on a path to understand love so that I'll always be a giver to my love ones, not a taker.

In just 12 more days, I will be the legal wife of the man who has been loving me unconditionally from the start, even when I haven't then.

I feel differently the same, should this make any sense. 7 years of relationship cum partnership, yet we knew each other 10 years ago, became close friends 9 years ago. We can practically proclaim "I've known her/him for almost half my life". Thus becoming legal spouses is merely a change to the 'official' status, just a paper ceremony. This way, everything remains. Yet, there are going to be so many upcoming phases and 'life' projects awaiting us - these are different tastes of life to be experienced.

Building our love nest is going to be exciting, temporarily casting aside the months of hard works to be done which have already began. The end product is definitely going to be worthwhile, we are certain.

Moving out physically from my comfort home I've been with since birth, I'm already having tearful thoughts and moments now and then. So much emotional adaptations to make. Not coming back to my heroine welcoming me home, saying she knows it's me just by the sound of my footsteps with my hero giving his classic slight smirk to her quirky comment. Not coming back to my siblings ordering food delivery and asking whether to count me in. Not coming back to my parents having their eyes glued to HK/Korean drama series and debating over their differing predictions of the next scene. Not coming back to my brother cooking maggie mee and stealing a few mouths from his bowl without him ever complaining. Not coming back to the bed my siz and I share till today and having random conversations, discussions, gossips till either of us falls asleep. So many many more. Some may be embarrassed to admit or even mention how attached they are to their family. Not me. I proudly declare how emotionally and physically attached I am to my most precious family, Just like the wordings on my back dictate, "My family is beautiful because they make me believe that I am, by showing me how worthy I am to be loved, and because of them, I'm being nurtured to love." How to not be deeply attached to parts of your own soul?

Fortunate thing is our own nest is still considered near to my comfort home so I'll still be able to get my healthy dose of emotional pill.

Each love journey to its own, and I pray for all love to be equal in the eyes of all. No love is inferior. No love should be disregarded. No love should be measured by gender, race, nationality. Love doesn't have to be further complicated by the narrow mindsets of others, it is beautiful, whether it is between the same or different gender/race/nationality. He loves her for her. He loves him for him. So why should gender come into the picture?

I'm digressing. It's just that, I want him to be happy too.
Money is the factor, for now, for my hesitancy now.

With the limited funds, I'd rather prioritize our dream house and photo shoot over a wedding banquet. The both of us only get to go through this once, this being our very own private affair. So why do families and relatives get to decide they have a say in what belongs to us? You've your own marriages (going to have one), likewise for us, this is our own too. How would you like it if we poke our nose around your private affairs? We do love our families, but that doesn't mean we like them to decide whether we should hold a wedding banquet or not. It is our own choice, a choice that belongs to the couple

Spending on our dream cozy house and photo shoot is different. It signifies the intimacy of the couple since both involves just them alone. Wedding banquet involves literally everyone, which I'm not detesting. Just that if I were to prioritize (which I need to since money isn't abundant for us), I will want to focus on renovating our own love nest and once in a lifetime photo shoot, first.
In a relationship, I condone silence being the solution, at least not a permanent one. Why do you choose to sweep everything under the carpet when you clearly know there's only so much that the carpet can contain? What good does keeping mum just to avoid an argument brings? Unhappiness, anger, soreness are all pent up, let alone not solving the core of the problem. Is this how a healthy relationship blossoms? I don't think so. And I know you are on the same page as me.

The immense feelings I have are insignificant compared to yours, because I'm not the victim of those sufferings. Hearing that shivering voice, seeing those droplets of tears, I feel my insides caving in. I know you aren't beaming with happiness for sure, but hearing how unhappy you are, it makes me rage.

A victim needs to voice out. No more prolonging, because all it does is prolonging your suffering and soon enough, there will be another innocent and young party suffering. If not for yourself, then for him.

"I've changed",  "you've changed", "we've changed" to me, aren't acceptable reasons for a couple deciding to split ways. Unless that change is changing for the worst, eg changed into a sex addict, gambler, torturer.

Every phases of our life, we're changing. Even every single day. Something may have happened at work/school that has changed a person, his perception, the way he reacts to future similar situations, even career goals may change, all in a day.

And if that is so, if change is a legitimate reason for a couple to go separate ways, then we're basically dealing with the fact that our relationship partner may not be able to accept that particular change and still love us as us. If that is a legitimate reason, we're actually saying we're game for an unreliable and unsturdy relationship? Because change is nothing like abc; no one can ascertain what comes next and when. So if a relationship isn't built to last through the unprecedented changes, perhaps, it has never been and will never be a reliable and trustworthy one.

If our own families can accept the tremendous changes we've been through since day one and still love us, then why can't the person who claims he/she loves us does the same?

How many months have passed since the last time I was here? I've not lost track of time, merely too occupied with the ticking clock.
And too occupied with my immense pride.

No, not only male has that pride and ego shit. If it's scientifically proven that only male has it, then I must be a male. How difficult it is to drop your pride and ego to admit you're in the wrong? For me, it IS difficult and I casually associate it to my "princess" attitude. C'mon, who am I kidding to even label this unlikable and juvenile attitude to "princess" when fairy tale is clearly a conjured up space. Nothing to do with being a princess or not, I am just being me, this immature side of me.

I don't throw around the word sorry easily. It is a good thing if you look at it from this angle - I'm not that person who says sorry just to avoid any argument when I don't mean it from the bottom of my heart. But the reason I don't utter sorry is simply attributed to my highly held pride and ego.

A night's sleep is therapeutic indeed. It wakes me up, non-literally.
A wake up call.
And I hope it's never too late. Because who knows when who will be tired of dealing with my shit and decide to make a move.

People may say I've changed him, but the changes I've undergone because of him... I'm seeing a better me, for him and the ones who love me and I don't know how long I'd take to realize that I need to change if I was not with him.

Sorry.
Sorry for doubting you. That's the last thing you deserve from me when you've never doubted me even when people around you said the worst of that me who was locking hands with someone else.
Sorry for letting emotions get the better of my reasoning skill.
Sorry for not saying sorry earlier.
I'm learning to, as you can see.
Doses of surprises still spring at my doorstep every now and then. They aren't the ones you'll label as glamorous but only superficial beings would go after that cause all you need is money to buy that sort of glamor. Whereas down to earth and simple surprises are those that bear the most significant meaning in my heart despite the 'low maintenance' factor. Killing two birds with one stone, why not?

Anyway, Redbull planned for a secret dinner date last Friday, just for me. How dear, I must say. Remembering my casual comment of wanting to try Pepperoni Pizzeria. Making the effort to call up the restaurant to make a reservation knowing the crowd.

Yes, small gestures but don't tell me these aren't the gestures that make it through cause I bet they are the only gestures that matter in the long run. Idc whether a guy is all lovey dovey, splurges all his time, effort & money on me, showers me with endless mushy convo all day all night, IN THE BEGINNING. I don't wish for a relationship which goes through the extravagant 'honeymoon' period only to find the other half disappearing together with the initial 'glamor' he once showered upon me.

The relationship & companionship I've wished for, I have it now, because of him. Sturdy, committed, full of nonsensical inner jokes, yet not lacking the passion and surprises.

"All we knead is love"
Doughs of love

Starter is the deep fried giant portobello mushroom with chicken and the red wine sauce!

I ONLY have thin-crust pizza.

Hybrid pizza. Salmon and ham+egg.
Pasta/pizza, I'll spam the cheese powder for sure.

Only one of their pastas is cream base which is the classic carbonara which I like but wanted to try something different so I chose venus clams in white wine sauce fusilli. The garlic taste is too strong for Redbull's liking but garlic lovers like me should like it as much as I did.
 A satisfied night. like always.
Thank you for You.

Whenever I chance upon a long standing relationship which has came to an end, I grieve for them. I grieve for the love that was once beautifully alive. Maybe they parted on good terms, maybe they parted while they're still in love with each other. But the latter is why I grieve even more. Why do people say 'I love you so I've to let you go'? Why can't love be simpler? Why does it have to be sacrificial? I mean am I the only one who caves in to a lover who's selfish enough to insist that I only belong to him, who wouldn't let me go despite how tough it is?
I've always been a person who walks away too easily, not because I'm too weak to stay to mend broken hearts/things, quite on the contrary, it's because I'm too strong-headed. I'm too determined that I'm independant enough to shield myself away from sorrows and find happiness and strength within me alone.

A strength and weakness, both at the same time. A weakness that I've to fight it off & isolate it.

I believe in changes, because if that prevails, tomorrow will always be better. Changes must be positive in order for the consequences to be the same too. Between us, changes are constantly revolving. Sometimes, we deal with them just fine, but other times, disasters took place. But every disaster evolves into a beautiful beginning for us. For you, I'll fight for us just like how you've never stopped fighting. We may have flaws, but what are they if we're willing to change for the better for a better us?
We tend to be too blinded by the past heartbreaks to see that true love do exist. The past two relationships that I had been in were what I would called teenage loves. Or rather, I shouldn't misuse such a sacred word, they should be known as mere teenage endeavors. Endeavors as they have served their same purpose in waking me up from my delusion of love.

The first relationship wasn't a beautiful disaster at all. Regretful? Far from that. I'm glad it has opened my eyes to how he obviously wasn't the guy. We had our own thinkings about life which were 2 worlds apart and the last thing we could do was to agree with each other's.

The second relationship couldn't get anymore interesting. A total scam it was. The only thing in my life thus far that I could call it drama. I wouldn't spill out what happened because words would just appear to be too vague for one not to get his tongue wagging. Come to think of it now, it was nothing but a dream. No tears & no heartaches after the separation/realization of him/us being a scam. Reason being I felt weird when I was with him. Felt weird when he held my hand, felt weird when words of promises came out of his mouth, felt weird that our friendship led to something more. I was just far more happy & comfortable when we were friends doing impromptu things together in our clique. Moral of this relationship: never trust people easily.

Current relationship which I'm more than certain will be the last is with the guy who loves me more than I've ever loved myself. He taught me how true love can be nurtured and how assurances are not merely words. Towards me, he's always so selfless which brings me guilt; guilty that I'm still in the process of being as selfless as him, if not more. It's like a competition. A healthy one. Meeting him has made me realized how beautiful it is to share dreams together & work hand in hand to turn them into realities.

Heartaches do not kill us, illnesses & deprivation of oxygen do. Never give up on love unless you have no second thought in giving up on life because living without love is as good as not living, just surviving.
